Everything is removable, I'v seen some nice chrome chain gards on ebay. A friend of mine found his up in a tree after horsing his old kaw. I dont think running without one is a good thing. JMO.

I had to pull my chain guard off when I went to a 140 rear tire. I've had no problems.

I have never had one on any bike I have ever owned. And if you think a plastic chain gaurd will protect you from a broken chain, I have some ocean front property in AZ for sale cheap.:P

...there's a story there somewhere?

...that's cause your chain hasn't flown off yet? ;)

I have a plastic chain gurard on the GPz and I agree it won't do spit if the chain launches itself...I mean if I launch the chain...into a tree! ;)

I took mine off and everything is ok.But you might want to look at the rear peg set up and see if there is any danger of your passanger getting a pantleg or something caught in the chain.Mine has custom rearsets.
