You might have to find a master cylinder with a angle to it so it will be level or choose a diffrent handlebar. Handlebars are cheaper. A Z1Classic has a angled master cylinder. Roy

so, if i were able to fill the system with fluid, would it necessarilly matter if the res. were not level? I have a new gasket for the top.

It's easy enough to fill the reservoir when the master cylinder is temporarily detached from the handlebar and being held level.

Which shape reservoir is on the master cylinder at hand -- barrel, trapezoidal, rectangular?

The master cylinder reservoir gasket is leak-prone over a period of time, and will likely allow brake fluid to seep out sooner or later.

When the bike is parked, if the fluid level is anywhere above the reservoir gasket, would be sure to turn the handlebars to minimize dripping onto the fuel tank or other painted areas.

Good Fortune! :)

If you can't start it with no more than 3 kicks stone cold, then it simply needs a tune up.

You have one set of points/condenser to check/adjust.
One coil to check.
Two spark plug wires and boots to check.
Four valves to check/adjust
Two carbs to clean and set.

How much easier could it be? :S
