Hey Gang,
I am finally replacing the worn out 630 chain on the GPz. I am going to a 530 o-ring chain and originally wanted to keep the stock gearing because I sometimes commute on it and did not want to turn too many revs at 75 MPH. With the 630 I had 13/33 gears for a ratio of 2.54. With the 530 I can run 17/43 and keep the same gearing or run 15/43 for a ratio of 2.87 for a little better acceleration. Is this too much of a jump? What would be a good compromise for my purposes?
TIA,
Jim

Compromise at 16/43 best of both worlds? What ever you choose the chain is going to like the bigger sprockets. Paul

first of all, 520 chains are so good today that its a shame not to use them.
17 to 15 is a huge jump percentage wise, more than 10%. wouldnt go higher by more than 1-2 at the back which equals 2.5-5%
that said, unlike other bikes, mama kawa geared the gpz750 quite short to get good 1/4 mile numbers. maybe check first with this SW?

your bike should be in the DB

Thanks Guys. The gearing commander site was a huge help. I'll probably stick with close to stock gearing. One thing I did notice is that the 17T front sprocket won't work with the GPz chain guard. Do people just take those off?
I'll probably end up with 15/38 set.

most people will not fit a 17, i had to because in my racer i run a very high swingarm angle, so it helps to prevent the chain from rubbing on the top slider and i dont run a guard anyway
would go with a 16 if i was you, a 15 might create a similar problem even with stock suspension setup.

With my 83 GPz 750 motor I run 16/42 for around town and 1/4 mile racing
and 16/45 for 1/8 mile.
Swing arm will not let me run a 15t front
