I don't know if the Z1 is the same, but on my KZ650 there is a white label on the right side (if you are sitting on the bike) of the steering neck and next to it the VIN is stamped into the neck. Lots of bikes are missing the label (sanded or blasted off when painting, etc.), but the VIN stamped into the frame should still be visible unless someone deliberately ground it off, put bondo over it, or replaced the neck with a piece of pipe. I saw a couple pictures on line and it looks as though they are outside wll of the tube on the left side of the tube if you were sitting in the seat. I figured I would ask you first before I start taking off the paint. I have been studying pictures of 74 Z frames online and they sure look similar (outside of the customizing). Thanks again Ed
