bent/twiste steering stem/clamps help! was created by kamakazie1000
Good morning Kzrider community!
I suspect my steering stem/triple clamps are bent it twisted. It's a 78 kz1000 with a 77kz1000 front end. The old fork tubes we're slightly bent so they have been rebuilt with new tubes, seals, and hardware. When I tried to slip the forks into the triple clamps I noticed that the forks don't align with the top clamp. Is there a way I can tell if my steering stem or clamps ate bent or twisted. I will upload some pictures when I get home later. I'm hoping this is as simple as just getting a new lower clamp/triple tree. Any suggestions, comments, concerns are welcome.
Regards.

Try placing the upper triple on a glass table & pressing down on a corner to see if it rocks. Mine rocked quite a bit. The replacement part I got only rocked a little bit, maybe 0.5mm or less, something like that.
The test doesn't work on my 650's lower triple, since there are a couple of projections on the bottom that keep it from laying flat. In the future I guess I could use a piece of plexiglass & cut out a hole for the projections... not sure how true plexiglass is, though.

So lay it down flat, right side up, as if it we're sitting on top of the stem? The upper clamp is a new piece, broke some bolts off in the old one. Like I said I'll post some pictures later, but the way things line up I'm thinking the lower clamp or stem is definitely bent

Finally took some pictures.
As you can see the forks don't line up at all the the top clamp. I have 2 top clamps, one that came with the old front end and a new one. Neither of them fit. Also when I took a closer look at the old fork tubes I noticed they we're bent. So, I'm thinking new lower clamp and steering stem?

Just 1 quick question.
Can you please pull off the top tree and put a straightedge on it?
The stem.
It looks bent in photo 4,Maybe just the lighting?
Its also past my bedtime .
