kz750 ltd to kz1000 ltd mag wheel swap question was created by KZ802
I have a 1980 KZ750 LTD that I already put in storage. The mag wheels are in need of redoing. I also have a 1978 KZ1000 LTD that I'm putting modern wheels on. I have the mag wheels off of that bike already. Anybody know if they are the same size and I could just swap them? I haven't had a chance to go to my storage unit to see if they are the same size yet. I'm hoping I can refurbish the wheels and just swap them over when I'm done.

I'm pretty sure the axles are different sizes, you can check the parts diagrams at kawasaki.com to confirm.

In regards to the axle sizes, could he use different wheel bearings?
I'm pretty sure my neighbor put a KZ1000 front wheel on his 650-CSR which has the same axle as the 750-4s, but I don't know from what 1000 he got the wheel. I think he had to use some spacers or something to line up the brake disk. The CSR is a single disk - I don't know if a dual disk would be problematic for your bike. Also, I kinda recall that the speedo drive didn't quite fit right - it doesn't contact the fork stop properly or something like that, but it works.
Are the 78 1000 wheels tube-type or tubeless?

Both sets of wheels are tubeless. They both look the same, and they are both 19 up front and 16 in the back. I will check the parts diagrams. I was hoping I would get lucky and it would make my job way easier but whatever. I guess I'll just take off the wheels and fix them if I have to.

Are your KZ1000 wheels stock? Stock 1978 KZ1000-B2 (LTD) wheels are tube type; not tubeless (see diagrams 1 & 2 below). The 1980 KZ750-H1 (LTD) wheels are tubeless. It is fine to run tubeless tires on tube type wheels, but you MUST use tubes in them. Ed

Tubeless wheels have an extra rim to keep the tire in place if you lose air; tube type do not have that extra rim. Ed

Here's a KZ550 Rr wheel that has "Tubeless" cast into it. The ridge isn't as prominent as the one in the above photo.
