Need some help with Master cylinder was created by b0ssdawg
So i was trying to get my master cylinder unstuck today, and broke my piston and im confused on even how i would go about rebuilding it, everything seems pretty tight in there? so my next question is do i buy the rebuild kit? (
kz900.com/kz900a/front-master.html
"Rebuild Kit - Master Cylinder for Z1 A B, KZ900 A4 A5, 77 KZ1000 A1 for single disc brakes. 1 $57.99" or do i just buy an after market master cylinder? ugh i feel like such a noob =( today

It depends on a few things...
1. original parts. Do you want to stay original?
2. is the diaphragm in good condition. If bad, hard to get a good used one and expensive $$$$$$$$$$$$$$...wouldn't rebuild.
3. is the piston bore pitted, scored or iffy.
If you rebuild it and change out fluid every 6 months, It will last many years.
I would flush entire system, clean it up and go DOT-5. If it gets on anything....dosen't hurt it at all. Dosent peel paint.
You can get a new aftermarket master cylinder for the same price of a full rebuild.
Just my 2-cents......

i would like to stay original if i could, but im also a student and trying to have this rebuild not kill the bank, im pretty sure my diaphragm is in good shape, im kinda unsure how to get the rest of the piston out and just rebuild it in general?

I had a stuck piston on a rebuild. Soaked in mystery oil for a day and used a large drift and a hammer....two med hits and it popped out the end without hurting the bore. Just don't know till you try. You could gently heat the exterior a little bit to expand and try.....just be gentle and don't break out the BFH.

ok so yours is round right....don't see a check valve or ball in diagram, parts list or listed. Thought it was the trapezoid shaped one....my bad.
here is a diagram for a 76 A-4
by the way...diaphragm is adav still for these.

yep, strip it all down.
Just stand the master cylinder up on a board...it will sit flat....don't put it in a vise.
oil up the bore areas on both sides, insert a rod, punch or drift in the brake line hole in till it bottoms out on old brake rod(don't bugger up the threads) and give it some taps.
Stop and inspect...is it moving at all?
