Fixing the pivot point for the swingarm

hi everyone, I've been working on my longtime project 1981 kz1000 k1 and have to fix what I messed up. A few years ago, before I realized I am incompetant, I wanted to add a newer swingarm to my bike. The swingarm I had lying around was bigger than the space where the original swingarm pivot point goes into. So in my infinite wisdom I clearanced out the frame where the pivot points are so it would accept a larger swingarm. I test fitted it and decided I wasn't going to use it and never reassembled the bike.

Now that I want to just build the bike with stock swingarm and parts, The space where the swingarm meets the frame is far too wide. Is there a way to fix this? Will putting some sort of spacer on each side work? Also, I used a grinder, so I don't have a clue how to get each side flush and even. Any ideass, tips, or tricks are much appreciated! Or am I screwed? Thanks!

You used a grinder on the swing arm mounting surfaces of the frame? Egads. I'm thinking screwed. You might want to haul the bike and swing arm to a competent machinist and have him repair it. Ed

Yeah, certainly not my brightest moment. I was reluctant to even post it, but I'm hoping to find maybe some kind of solution. Maybe a new damn frame.

if you could get it flattened out a couple spacers would make it usable again.

if i had it in my hands i would cut out whats left of the original mounts and machine some new ones and weld them back in so it looked just like factory.

you being in mass. means i'm not going to get it in my hands most probably !

you need a set of dial calipers.cheap ones are fine

use them to measure top bottom front back of each hole and file the frame mountings until they are as square as you can get them.
then measure your frames inside dimension and subtract the swingarm width (with dust caps)from that,divide that number in two and that is the dimension of the width of the spacers you will need.

Thanks Leon! Do you know if the swingarm is mounted perfectly in the center of the frame? I'm concerned that maybe it is offset slightly to one side from the factory? Which would cause all sorts of alignment issues.

they are meant to be centered.
now,
given manufacturing tolerances whether they are all truly on center i can't confirm.
if you have your complete rear wheel swingarm brake spacers axle assembly together square up the frame mountings and slip it all into the frame on the swingarm pivot bolt and let the chain line tell you where it want's to be.then just get some spacers made to fill the gaps .

It's funny you sent that link. I was browsing through there and found that! I've dealt with Brian in the past and he's a great guy, I'm working with him to get one now! Maybe I can salvage this frame too, but I/'m also going to get a frame from him. Crisis averted so far, and I'll try Leon's suggestion as well. I'll have a good intact frame to compare it to, so hopefully I can get it right. Thanks guys!
