I have a small leak from the shifter shaft on an 83 Kz1100 ltd shaft drive. Any one have any experience on how to replace it? I took the rear wheel off, then the bolts to the case but I cannot get the rear shaft drive off. The bolts are seized on the four bolts that hold the shaft to the case. Do I need to remove the center support bolt out and drop the whole center unit ?(black thing, not sure what these parts are called sorry) If so how? any tips would be great. I ordered a manual on the bike yesterday, so maybe I find out when it gets here. Thanks in advance.

May be helpful to view the parts diagrams at kawasaki.com website, where there's lots of good info, including parts diagrams, part names, part numbers, models sharing same part, availability, etc.

Here's a link for help with navigating the site and finding information.

Seized parts may often be loosened by soaking for a day or so with Kroil, Liquid Wrench, or similar penetrating lubricant.
A good diy penetrant is a 50-50 blend of ATF and acetone.

May also help to heat the bolts with a torch just before attempting to loosen them. Whereby hopefully, the aluminum case threads will expand more than the steel bolts thereby loosening the thread grip.

Heat also serves to loosen any red loctite that might have been applied when the parts were assembled.

Good Fortune! :)

Thanks, I soaked it down and will wait for the manual to come. Hopefully it will all come clear with pictures and instructions.

Poopboy if all you are doing is replacing the shifter shaft seal all you have to do is remove the Front Bevel Gearcase cover this one ;)

you can then access the shifter shaft and seal

Really? How is it removed? How do you install the new one? Man if that is true I feel like an idiot. I assumed it was pressed in from the backside.

Could try using a small sheet metal screw to thread into the old seal, then grasp the screw and pull out the old seal.

Lube the new seal and then press it into position in the case around the shaft.

Good Fortune! :)

So it is just pressed in? Man that would be so simple. I will have to give it a try tomorrow.

Usually a good idea to first drain the oil, or have a catch pan in position..

Be careful not to damage the seal when placing it over the end of the shift shaft. Could wrap some tape over the end of the shift shaft to help avoid cutting the seal.

Good Fortune! :)

Yeah, that was way too easy. Should have asked here first before trusting some guys post on another site. Pulled it off with a small screwdriver, and pushed the new one on with a large socket. At least I can grease up the shaft drive components while I have them apart. Thanks again.
