Happy medium for sprocket sizes KZ900 was created by SeattleKZ
I'm gonna put new sprockets and chain on my KZ900. I just put got the engine back together with APE 410 cams and MTC 1015 pistons. I'm running the stock tire sizes. I think I'd like to add a little top speed but not so much I can't jump off the line. What gear ratio would yield a nice rpm range at 70mph but still have some jump off the line?
I'm going to be using a 530 set up

On my KZ 1000 I have tried these:
Sorry, these are 630 numbers on a 18" rear tire.
15 - 35 Stock on some bikes. Good for Hot-Street for built bike.
15 - 32 Stock on some bikes. I think this is a good combo for street - highway.
15 - 29 70 mph at 5000 Needs work / RPM to get out of hole on street. Great for hard launch slipping clutch. I have been 130 mph on this combo. Custom made sprocket.
14 - 35 Was way to high. 118 mph max at 9500 to 10,000 Real thrill to ride.
14 - 33 NO
14 - 32 Maybe?

I'm considering a 18/40 and buying a 17 too to see how that works

I went up one tooth from stock on the front sprocket on my Z1B. Still has boat loads of power and can cruise at 80mph no prob.
Watch chain clearance running o-ring 630.
