Dust Shields and Seal??? was created by kzdcw
Do you lubricate these 2 dust shaft seals and 1 dust rubber seal on a Front Brake Caliber rebuild off of a 78' KZ1000? Have it disassembled right now and am wanting to know if any lubricant is used? What would you guys recommend?

You have to be careful using any kind of petroleum based lube around the rubber parts,it will swell/deform them.

On the caliper shafts I used Permatex disk brake caliper lube. One little packet will last for years.
For the caliper piston seal I think I applied a very light coating of brake fluid.... not much so that I wouldn't get any on the new caliper paint.

Thanks Martin. I'll pick up some up on the way home from work today. Outside of the caliper piston is the dust shield too. I assume you can use some of the Permatex caliper lube there too?

I did not use the Permatex lube on the caliper. However, it's a synthetic lubricant & I think it's compatible with brake fluid. The TDS from their site lists the brake pistons on the application list. From other forums, guys who have done many brake jobs (probably mc mechanics) say they use brake grease for caliper assembly, including on the pistons (usually the Permatex stuff or Castrol Red Rubber Grease).
