Need help determining bike model was created by DenisG
Hello,
I'm new to the forum and recently obtained a 1978 kz650. The bike has only 12,000 k miles and everything is good so far but I do need to buy a couple parts. Unfortunately I'm having some trouble finding which model I have. As I could tell It has a 2 front disc brake set up in the front and disc brake in the rear. I also as well will attach the engine number and the frame number hoping that will help. If anybody could give some insight as to what it might be, that would be great.
Frame number
Kz650c - 010052
Engine number
kz650 be 054955

The disc brakes and the b in the serial number would make me guess its an ltd.
What parts are you trying to find?
Opps didn't realize the b was in the engine serial number

Need a side view. Your frame serial no. on the frame, the v.I.n., tells the bike model.

Thank you. To be honest I have a good amount I need. I actually received it today. But so far I need a new ignition and i'm sure there's a lot more to come after that. Thanks for the reply though.

No doubt about it - your bike is a 1978 KZ650-C2. The engine serial numbers in all B and C models began with "KZ650BE", so that cannot be used to determine the model, but the "C" in the Kz650C010052VIN shows it is a "C" model. Here's a link to a table that shows the engine and VIN numbers for the various KZ650 models. Ed

I wouldn't think there would be much difference in ignition between models other than points or electronic.

Correct. All the 1978 models came with points ignition systems. The KZ650 didn't get electronic ignition until 1981. One big difference between the various years of the KZ650 models was the charging system. When it comes to that one needs to be sure they get parts for the exact year/model bike they own. Ed
