I flush my brake fluid the easy way. I do the front MC and both front calipers at the same time, and then the rear MC and caliper. This makes a quick and thorough job of it. :) Ed

I've been considering switching to DOT5 on my 1984 Honda Interceptor clutch. It has a tiny leak from the weep hole on the slave cylinder that drips down the sprocket cover. One drop a month or less.

I'm going to replace the seals but just to be sure and not ruin the new paint on the cover I'm considering switching. I've been reading about DOT5 online and the conversations are just as interesting as opinions on what brand oil to use.

One thing....is regular old drug store rubbing alcohol the right thing to use to clean the parts prior to switching?

80B4 wrote: Dot 5 fluid does not mix with Glycol brake fluids and Dot 5 is lighter too. This means that no amount of normal bleeding will ever remove all of the glycol fluid from a system changed over to Dot 5. The old glycol fluid will pool in the calliper because it is heavier and not come out the brake bleeder fitting. This will cause corrosion problems in the long run.

Lots of folks use alcohol for cleaning brake components and never have problems,[strike] but I believe it is safer to use products made specifically for that purpose. There are tons of different brake cleaning fluids available from CRC, 3M, Permatex, TRW, and numerous other companies. [/strike]

The above struck through info is bogus. As Plummen points out below brake cleaning fluid should NOT be used on rubber or plastic brake parts! Sorry about the mistake!

Plummen you are absolutely correct!

I got off my lazy ass, went to the basement, and read the warnings on my CRC Brakleen can. It says PROTECT RUBBER PARTS FROM SPRAY! I fixed my posting above. Thank you for correcting me! Ed

So many think, or have read no way to properly blead the brakes if changed to dot5 i guess. These are mostly "have read or think" i would assume. Has anyone actually changed to dot5 and have the brakes go all corrosion, and need work ever? I doubt. All propaganda spread through word of warning from theory and not real world testing by riding miles and miles, not one case of dot5 actually causing corrosion or a reaction while bleeding out the dot3 that I've actually read about in 30 years.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Absolutely EVERY container of Dot5 brake fluid I have ever inspected clearly states that Dot5 should never be mixed with Dot 3, Dot 4 or the new Dot5.1. Bel-Ray, AGS, Gunk, EBC, Maxima, SSBC, and others. Correctly cleaning a hydraulic brake system is not difficult or expensive. If you want to experiment with mixing glycol and silicone fluids and ignore every fluid manufacturers directions, be my guest. I don't wish you any bad luck, but I think you are either lazy or foolish.

Ok, lets do it right , don't half ass it..if its worth doing, why not do it the proper way.

If you cant control yourself to weed out a few hours or a day during the summer to do right, wait till winter and take your time.

I can remove my front master cylinder, dual brake calipers, dissemble, clean, reassemble and be riding that fricken day.....with the piece of mind its done right????

I guess I'm a rarity in this fast pace life......maybe a bit over the top in my preparation and work ethic......well ..... No.
