KZ1000 front wheel ID was created by Shdwdrgn
I was going to order some replacement wheel bearings, but I'm not sure of exactly what I have here. The bike is a 1981 KZ1000J, however the forks have the offset axle rather than the inline style. Does this mean the forks came from a LTD? And more importantly, are the bearings the same or different between the J and K models? I have rear wheels from both a J and a K model, so I'm crossing my fingers that they all used the same bearings and I won't need to keep a list of which items on this bike require which replacement parts...

looks to be 81 and later csr 1000 ltd lower forks...... :unsure:

1981 J, M, K models all used the same front wheel bearings. However, I'd nail down which model you actually own...it'll be important eventually...

Well that's the thing... The bike has been confirmed as a J. However there is the obvious issue of the front fork which doesn't seem to match, indicating PO probably changed some parts. There was a thread last year about this, and although the different forks change the geometry, it probably isn't enough to have a serious affect on rideability.

Meanwhile, in my efforts to make the bike usable again, I have acquired the rear half of a 1981 K. I spliced together the frames from both, and have a more complete wiring harness from the K (which of course had more connectors and more factory options). So what I am ending up with is a bike that will be much more K than J when I finish. I am checking parts as I go, and so far I can consistently buy parts for the K to fit my bike. It will also be helpful if I sell if again down the road to be able to tell the new owner that they just need to buy LTD parts to replace anything on it.

So what about the rear wheel? Would that also share the same bearings between J/K/M?

Yes, the rear wheel bearings are the same also (1981 J, K, M). There are differences in the motor (cams, carbs, etc) between the three models.

The same front 7 spoke 19" mag was seen on many/all the later z / GPz fours from 400 to 1100. The
18" rear mag wheel looked the the same but the rim was a touch wider on the later J, R and GPz11 models. The smaller fours all shared the same earlier slightly narrower rear rim 7 spoke, except some custom models. The z1100R and z1300 had an 18" front.

Those leading axle forks, not z1000J I don't think. Are they Showa 36mm GPz550 D1 maybe?

With leading axle you get more trail , castor angle remain the same I think. Result more stable at speed and less 'flicky' turning into bends I would think. If the yokes are non standard - maybe even z750 if 36mm then the increased trail might be compensated by a differing yoke offset.

Front discs on these are 270mm, but some GPz750R1 and I think z750 E/L are 260mm...The later gt550 shaft drive had 280mm discs, all on that same 19" 7 spoke mag.
