New sprocket types was created by Irish Yobbo
I was in the process of chaning my kz250 belt drive to a chain drive, as I have a chain conversion and belts are around the $400 mark these days. Took off the sprocket cover, and found that my conversion sprocket didn't have the right number of splines. But as it turns out, it looks like most don't and that 6 is the corrent number for my engine! My engine has a 13-spline shaft, and the chain sprocket has only 6. But most exploded diagrams and replacement sprockets for this bike have 6 as well.

Does anybody know the correct sprocket for this application, or why I have a different output shaft?

What year is your KZ250? Or is it a Z250 (European model)? Poking around the diagrams at Partzilla, the front sprocket for the KZ305 looks like it might work. ???

Searched eebbaayy for 13144-1046 --- there are quite a few listed:
81-82 Kawasaki KZ305 15 Tooth Front Sprocket NEW

For comparison: 1981 KZ250 --- 13144-069

I think you may be right! Very strange. My bike is a 1985 model - very late.

The only issue I have now is if the sprockets are compatible. These sprockets were manufactured by JT Sprockets. I looked up their part numbers as well as the one for the kz305:

I have this .
It looks like I need this .

Note that the 305 sprocket uses a 530 pitch chain, but the 250 uses a 520! I don't think it will fit. I might need to buy a whole new set :/

I guess Kawasaki switched the output shaft on your bike to the type found on the 305s. ???
From the few I checked it seems like the 250 thru 1983 had 6 splines & the 305 thru 88 had 13. I did not see an 85 KZ250 --- the diagrams are for the USA models.

OK, I've done some snooping.

This is what I have, and what should fit if the shaft wasn't a 13-spline one.

This is the kz305 sprocket that goes on the 305 shaft I suspect I have, but it's for a 530 chain, not a 520.

But this looks like it might fit - exactly the same as the 305 sprocket but for a 520 chain, so it will work with my chain and rear sprocket. What do you reckon - think this will work? Or have I missing anything?

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationDifferent year KZ250 bikes used different splines. Just buy the correct sprocket for your bike and you should be ok. Here's an example - $14 & free shipping. Ed
