Too many weights on spoked rim? was created by DoctoRot
I found a KZ400 wheel for $40 shipped but in the photo i noticed there are a lot of weights on one side of the rim. This makes me suspicious that the wheel is bent or something and i cant tell in the pics. I suspect I could re-true the wheel and take some wobble out. Should i buy it?

Could have been a bad tire or a wrongly oriented tire on there when it was balanced.
I'm not certain if it can be retrued or not though

I would ask the seller to double-check for dents & if it appears to be true.

I have seen a bad wire wheel in my time. The weights do concern me.
I would ask.....do we go on faith that the guy who balanced this rim had a clue???
Its on a motorcycle tire rack? looks to be a motorcycle shop? the guy should be able to judge if its good or not and offer a 100% guarantee on the rim or I would stay clear of it.

The incorrectly oriented tire is a probability as well. Seller claims there is a very slight wobble, but that the wheel should be usable. Ive yet to see an extruded rim be perfect, seems to always be a slight wobble at the weld. For $40 i'm gonna take the gamble.

It could be to compensate for wheel hop due to the wheel being out of round.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Why the weight is hard to say, but I doubt too many guys try to compensate for a bent wheel by adding weights. That just seems unlikely to me. Probably operator error in balance and addition of unnecessary weights.
