Seat lock problem 81gpz550 was created by chirpy999
Hi I had a problem today when my ignition key wouldn't work and I ended up snapping the key at the petrol station and I had to push the bike home about a mile. I had another switch which I fitted and was able to get the bike started and was able to go for a ride. Now the problem is I cant unlock the seat , I have tried a couple of keys but no joy. I tried removing the pins that fit through the hinges on the other side but only one will come out. I a m thinking the only answer is to drill the old one out any else have any ideas.

If you have the number from the ignition switch, Rstnick can probably make a key for you.

If Rstnick isn't available, you can try searching the key number on eebbaayy --- I did the other day & found a seller who cuts new keys using the code you provide.

If your ignition doesn't have a number, check the seat lock or the steering lock for a 3 digit number, it's very hard to see, I had to use a magnifying glass, once you get the #, start calling local locksmiths, & see if they make motocycle keys by code, ...I lost my keys last year & that's what I did, they charged me 20.00 for 2 keys . & I was good to go ,

Thanks everyone, I have found a number on the ignition lock 361518 but I am not sure if that is a code as all the codes on the ebay ad had a z in front and the new keys have a z on them. I will get my magnifying glass out and see if theres any code on the seat lock
Thanks

The key code should be a Z series number for a GPz..
Z5001 to Z6000.
Could be on your broken key too.
Do oil the seat lock, and all your locks.
A silicone spray works well.

The Z key code number is on the seat lock, but you need to take it out first as it is out of sight. It is stamped behind the lock body, .This 4 digit code will get you a new key cut, there is a guy on ebay who does it.
The z650 and 900 locks look very similar and I think they are the same part number.
Did you get the caliper mount I sent?

Hi managed to get the barrell out of the lock by drilling out the dowel pinms, found the z number after scraping the paint off, further dismantled the lock and recovered the broken piece. Will be going to the keycutters tonight. Martin that is a very informative picture nice that its on record to help out anyone else in future.
