Z1R rear shock disassembly question was created by PaintWorkz
Does anyone have any experience removing the springs from the shocks on a 78 or 80 KZ1000 Z1R? I see the roll pin under the top eye and flats on upper casting.

It might be possible to use a spring compressor like the ones for struts. My new shocks have a slot in the top retainer. They'll be easy. The ones I took off have a pin but it is buried in the casting. I've been thinking of switching the covers so my new ones will have the reflectors. I rented a compressor from Auto Zone when I installed strut cartridges in a Maxima three years ago. It looked like it would work on smaller springs.

i've seen what you are talking about paintworkz.
it stands to reason you would drive out the pin and be ably to screw the eye off.
but i have never done it myself, and therefore don't know for sure.
let us know what you do.

I am not sure what the difference between the two models is, but I'm sure they'd be happy to 'splain it.

I ordered a spring compressor set up, I understand that would be the first step for disassembly. I am not sure on the rest of the steps. I don't want to wreck stuff knocking the roll pin out or trying to do something else that is not right.

Rent was the wrong word. I had to buy a compressor, use it then return it and got my money back. AZ offers the same service. Only one style was available and I had to be careful I didn't get a damaged one. They had two. One was damaged so I insisted on the new one otherwise I would have had to keep the damaged one. Nice try.

I wonder if a couple of days soaking in PB Blaster would make pin removal go more smoothly?

It may help but if it's a roll pin and it's at the top of the shock, it should drive right out with the proper size punch.
