Center Stand and Exhaust - From an 82 to a 79 was created by pensanian
Hey guys!
I tried to dig through the forums to see if this has been discussed yet, so forgive me if I missed it and am repeating some old stuff. But any help would be appreciated. I'm in the middle of bringing my brother's '79 KZ750 back to life, and man oh man. This bike has become my world. I absolutely love it. I found an 82 KZ at a salvage yard that has been pretty well picked over, except it still has the center stand and exhaust Kawa exhaust pipes in really good shape, and I might snag them if they'll fit my bike. Here's a photo of the bike as it is now, with home-made straight pipes, courtesy of my dad about ten years ago
Has anyone tried putting these things, from an '82, onto a '79? I haven't done any measurements yet, which I plan on doing as soon as weather permits me to get up there. The frames look to be extremely similar but perhaps one of you guys have tried it.
Thanks for any input!
Paul

The 750-Twin engine unit is pretty much the same through the model run, so the exhaust system should be a bolt on, but you may have to fabricate muffler hanger brackets since the frames & muffler stays are different.
The diagrams for the 82 CSR Twin don't show a center stand, so it's hard to say whether or not the one at the salvage yard will work with your 79. It probably will, but that's just a guess. You can compare stuff at Partzilla. The 83 Belt had a center stand.

Martin,
Thanks for that! The bike at the yard is indeed a belt drive, so I must have been wrong thinking it's an 82.. must be an 83. Hopefully Within the next week I can just ride my bike to the yard and try to do the swap there. It'd be nice to have a center stand. I do love the straight pipes around town, but on the highway they tend to tire me out :woohoo:
Thanks again! I'll report back with what I find.
