Z1R Frame Number Info was created by larriken
Hi all, just hoping someone out there may be able to help out. I am looking at doing a deal on a Z1R and was trying to work out what year it is. Attached is a photo of the frame number KZTOOD-017393. The bike has the large tank and I am guessing it is a D2 or D3? Any help is appreciated. Cheers.

According to the Kawasaki Model Recognition Manuals, the photo is of a 1979 KZ1000D1. The D2 would have fallen between 17501 and 17800...the D3 after 17801. I am aware of only a couple surviving D2's. The D3 did have a larger tank than the D1, but that change might have been made later in life. There was also an aftermarket large tank available for the European market (with the autobahn in mind)

Either small or big tank is correct for the D1 .
The first batch of D1's were originally produced with the small tank and the larger tank soon followed as an optional add on or alternative at the dealers along with a front brake upgrade kit which included sintered brake pads and a redesigned improved ratio lever arm for the cable operated hydraulic front brake master cylinder.

Do you have a link to these reference manuals sir?

I'm trying to find what month/year my A1 was made, having a new VIN label made.

If you are referring to the Model Recognition Manuals, then they are not on-line, to the best of my knowledge. I do own the first four produced by Kawasaki and they are still occasionally available on eBay and a company out of New Zealand has reprinted them. I can look up information for you but the month of production is not included.

This link below will take you to the ZPOWER model identification page.
Click on the image alongside your model and it will display engine/frame numbers , year and model differences etc.
It is a UK site but also has information regarding US models etc.
