Swing arm sleeve on my 82 GPz750 was created by GKBO

The lack of any grease for YEARS left my swing arm sleeve looking bad and they're NLA from Kawasaki :P So in my search for a solution I came across this .The sleeve is as 22mm OD with a 16mm ID,fond this that would fit the bill but the $ 27.93CAD with shipping is a bit steep :blink:Any idea's on something less pricey?

I'd pass on that piece of tube. It's not ground for roundness like the OEM part. Using it will destroy the bearings in short order.

No the original sleeve has been grooved by the destroyed needle bearings so it's not a usable piece :( looks like the kit from England is my only option :dry:

I just remembered I have the sleeve of my abandoned KDX project,it's the same size .Thinking I'd just cut that in 1/2 and use it on the bearing ends and use the original cut to suit sleeve as a spacer.Was thinking about welding then together but don't think I need to bother..

You can save that sleeve by just welding in new metal and turning on a lathe.
Mine was just as bad.

YOu may want tocheck is your swing arms carries 2 or 4 bearings. Mine has 4 (2 each side).

Since the tube is contacting directly with the needle bearings it's important that it be smooth, round, and hard. You can weld the surface and grind to assure roundness, but it will be soft, not hard, thereafter.

I tought of that, but trust me. Sleeve metal is not hardened, form my experience it seems like SAE 1045. You could scracht it with anything. However I welded in Stainless Steels, wich is certainly harder. After turning in the lathe, I smoothed the surface with 400 and 600 dry sand grit.

300 series stainless is a lot softer then 1045 unless you used 400 series s.s and then heat treated it . 1045 can be heat treated to around 50 plus rockwell.

original owner of a 1984 gpz 750
1985 turbo 750 stock, being restored.
1984 gpz 750 with 810 cc wiesco's megacycle cams(471-10) 34 mm flatslides v&h pipe ported head dyna ignition. bottom end, crank case from turbo 750 and sprockets.

I do this all the time in my work. As you correctly pointed, 400 series was used.
You are right about tempering steel.
