Hi all, I have searched for this without success.
I didn't really think this would be a chance, but I had to take out my back wheel, so shoved the ZXR wheel in for a look. It's a 5.5 " rim, and I have swingarm and chain clearance with the 180 tyre. I might go a narrower tyre. I reckon I need to take 2cm (7/8"?) out of the total hub width.
has anyone done this before?
How narrow a tyre could you go on a 5.5" rim without being ridiculous?

Sorry, dont understand. If you have tyre and swingarm clearance, whats the problem? Is it the chain run youre worried about or clearance by the frame downtube? The chain run is usually sorted by an offset front sprocket though this can lead to the chain being too far out and hitting the inside of the frame downtube. Some people cut out a piece of the down tube to allow clearance .Ive also heard of heating the down tube and crushing it with a clamp,if you only need a little bit of clearance.
I didnt want to do either of these,so for me it was a balance. 160 tyre/530 chain/10mm (+-) milled off the sprocket carrier/offset front sprocket. Also I wanted the wheel sitting centered (though there are some people that reckon this isnt important)It was a bit of a challenge to calculate it all but it worked out well and I didnt have to mess with the frame.I think I have about 7mm clearance twixt chain and tyre on one side and 7mm twixt chain and inside of frame on the other and the wheel is sitting bang on the centerline..
Different bike, wheel and swingarm than yours but hope this helps.

Cheers Davido: I have an offset sprocket already, and I think alignment is so far looking close. I am going to look closer tonight, but I guess my question is really about machining the sprocket carrier - I can't see where I can take much metal out where it will reduce the width and not mess with the bearing.

First wheel I tried was an old GSXR with a 180 tyre.Way too big. Then I got a ZRX400 wheel but it had very little meat on it.Not enough to safely shave down. I was more concerned about that than anything else.I wanted to be sure that I wasnt going to weaken the sprocket carrier.I ended up using a Bandit 600 wheel. I think I took about 10mm off the face of the carrier.Plenty of meat left on it to keep things safe and no problems with the bearing. Also had to shorten and rethread the bolts but that was no problem.Shiftting down the chain size was a big help, I dont think it would have worked with the old chain (630 or something,I cant remember).

Yep, I'm thinking a 600 wheel will be a better size
