I can only speak on the earlier models, but the speedo has a liquid filled coupling inside. A bouncing needle is a symptom that it is losing fluid. Unfortunately the coupling can not be refilled. Replacement is the only option and the coupling it is not sold as a separate item . Contact Bob at Z-resto[ www.zresto.com/ ]. He'll know what your options are.

Ahh, there's the info I was looking for, thank you. So it's likely not repairable, well easy to fix without new parts, parts that are not listed for sale. Guessing the fluid coupling is the same for different models so it's possible to use one out of another speedo I bet.

Well then I guess the guy who's restored hundreds of Z1 speedo's and tachs as a business doesn't know what he's talking about either. See the section on the oil filled damper at the bottom of this link.

None of any KZ 1000 instruments I have, or have opened up, have that fat oil filled chamber.

Actually, the fluid can be replaced. Here's the speedometer / tachometer place that does it:

Well lets see. I have two junk dampeners. One tach and one speedo at home. I'll compare and cut them open this afternoon when I get there. The reason I said they're solid is the shafts don't turn but I'd like to put this to bed either way. I'll make a clip of it.

You have to break off the two frame tabs holding the axle shaft of the OD drum. Doesn't look like any good way to fix the frame after doing that.
Mine look smaller in diameter and solid, plus not large enough to hold any dampening liquid.

I'm sure they're solid. I bent the tabs enough to get them apart then bent them back. Used a punch to tighten them.

hmmmm, I think If that tube, which you snipped in half, was filled with a fluid, I think it would act as some kind of inertial damper.
