Does anyone know if : Triple tree was created by Mb460atx
Hey guys, great results with my last question, let's see if anyone can help with this.

does anyone know if Triple trees from an '80 LTD 550 (according to this ebay auction, that's a thing) will fit an 82 KZ550 H in the neck area? and / or if the fork spacing, (axle length) would be the same?

the problem i'm having now, is the lady who's bike i'm fixing was wrecked. she bought a bunch of parts... most of them wrong.

her bike is a 35mm fork (which are bent beyond repair), she brought me 36mm forks and I'm basically trying to figure out the best way to fix the situation for her without making her buy new forks, which are typically the most expensive part. I think the forks she bought, were most likely off an LTD. but i really don't know for sure.

single disk setup if that helps.

the biggest problem is, if we get a triple that fits the fork, it may not fit the neck, may be too long, too short, and the spacing may be too wide for the axle, then there are even more things to fight with.

I'm sure there's someone out there who can tell me exactly what would work / fit properly on this bike with the 36mm forks?

Thanks in advance.

From Partzilla all of the KZ550 models have the same axle. 41068-1009 AXLE,FRONT,L=204M/M
and they all seem to have leading axle forks, but the GPz is dual disk. Dual disks are sometimes smaller in diameter than single disks, so the dual calipers sit lower on the fork legs. Do the Ltd forks have a caliper mount on the right fork leg & are the mounts at the correct height?

From the All-Balls-Racing fork conversion in regards to the bearings, the KZ550-C Ltd triple tree should mate to the GPz. You'll then need to figure out the steering stem length & fork tube spacing. Note: If you swap triple trees, the gpz meters may not fit the donor steering stem, so that might be something else to figure out.

In the long run, it might be cheaper and a lot less frustrating to sell the incorrect parts, and buy the right stuff.

As Martin pointed out, the LTD forks do have both caliper mounts, but the caliper mounts are in the wrong place for the Gpz disks. The LTD single disk is bigger, so the caliper is spaced further away from the axle. This means the pads won't sit fully on the disk. You would have to mount two larger disks to the wheel in order to get the brake pad to contact the disk fully.

The LTD disks are larger diameter, but also thicker and way heavier. They also will not swap to the 82 Kz550H gpz wheel. The H wheel has 5 bolts. The LTD disks are not compatible.

There are two types of LTD disks. The older style disks come on a carrier, whereas the newer style disks bolt directly to the wheel. But neither of the LTD disks (older or newer) would have 5 bolts. You would need a 7-spoke front wheel to use the LTD disks, and you would need an older style wheel to use the older style disks, or a newer style wheel to use the newer style disks.

The only 36mm Kz550 forks you could use are probably the Kz550D1 gpz. But that was only made one year, and the forks are hard to find in any decent condition. However, I'm not sure of the ZX550A forks diameter. Maybe they can work, but they have a hydraulic anti-dive feature built in using the brake fluid. It doesn't work all that great and adds complexity.
