So I'm doing my first bike build and I've done everything myself but I need to know if you need the rear motor mounts before I can finish up welding my frame. I've looked through here and haven't found anything suggesting I absolutely need them but I want people who's dealt with bikes before to tell me their experience and hear their opinion on it.

Maybe I don't understand what you mean, but I'd say yes. I don't know what motorcycle you have, but I would look into adding dampered motor mounts found on some later KZs, such as the 750-L3 or KZ700, assuming your bike doesn't have the dampers already, whatever model it is.

I think it would be a very bad idea to remove or omit any of the motor mounts. You do not want the engine to be moving about in the frame. Ed

With no background, info, pictures, and one post asking a question if the engine needs the rear mounts? . .. You will soon find, in case you don't know, the rear mounts are the most important engine mounts on anything with 2 wheels.
I guess if the chain doesn't need to stay aligned, or more vibration is desirable because you are actually building a 6 foot long vibrator that parts are more likely to crack and fall off because dependability is not a priority. <please excuse the sarcasm>

I bought this >new and IMPROVED< honda rebel in a sukzuki frame and ended up giving the frame to my local scrap man after I recovered the motor.
It would have worked, since he butchered the original frame to get the swingarm pivot, if he had figured out a way to tie it all together. The only reason I can think of to butcher this bike would be no title, but if someone really WANTS to get a title for a bike (unless it's stolen) , it can be done. As you can see, the rear mount is probably the most important engine mount on a motorcycle. It maintains chain alignment and in this case is also the swingarm pivot.
This is what it is supposed to look like.

With out all the proper motor mounts the chain will pull the motor back into the rear tire which I would consider a bad thing.

There really are very few things that can be removed from a motorcycle frame without creating some serious problems. As you can see, motor mounts are definitely on the do not remove list.
