Looking for brake caliper and master cylinder for 1978 KZ650B was created by Knucklehead
Hey all, I am looking for a front brake caliper and a master cylinder for my bike. I've struck out with the usual online stores. Can you still get these without having to buy used parts? I've found rebuild kits for the caliper and aftermarket master cylinders. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've seen aftermarket master cylinders on ebay. Will these work as well? I have the single disc brake up front.
Thanks!
Thanks!

No new parts for these in a while. Z1 Enterprises and Z1 parts.net have reproductions of a lot of parts. Other than that it's used parts.

I installed a good used Honda CBR500 Fr brake mc onto my 81 KZ650-CSR w single disk Fr brake. The Honda mc has a modern brake light switch, so I got the Fr brake wire lead assy from a late model KZ1000P police bike >> it was a direct fit & the wire colors are the same as the csr.
1996-2005 KZ1000P Police Fr brake light switch wire lead 26011-1489.
has female spade terminals w protective covers on one end & female/male bullet terminals on the other end.
wire colors & bullet terminals match the 650-CSR wire harness.

Thanks guys. I found an aftermarket one that I hope works and a used brake caliper. The guy said its in excellent condition but I bought a rebuild kit just in case. LOL

Okay. I went with a Honda mc because it's an oem part & Made in Japan, plus it was pretty inexpensive on EB & rebuild kits are readily available. New oem brake levers are available as well, which I installed. I have no idea what mc you got or where it's made, but I don't trust the chinese stuff & avoid made in china whenever possible as it's often times cheap junk.

So the honda mc matched up with the stock brake caliper? I may go that route if this aftemarket one is a piece of junk.

Yes, the CBR500 has a single disk Fr brake & the piston is the same size (12.5mm or 1/2"). With modern master cylinders all you have to do is match a single disk mc w single disk Fr brake or dual disk mc w dual disk Fr brake, and match the piston size. Most single disk are 12.5mm & most dual disk are 16 mm. Some modern mc are 14mm & I don't recall their application.
The aftermarket one you got may be fine >> I've never heard of anyone having a problem or a failure. I'm just sick of everything about china. I will say though that personally, I'd be worried about the brake lever mount crumbling under extreme braking, such as during a panic stop. I've heard of chinese shocks breaking off at the mounts.

Yeah, I'm no fan of that the chinese parts that are made like crap. The one I got says "assembled in America" but I'm sure its Chinese parts.
Thanks for the info! Happy New Year!
