You can get a cheap chain tool from Cycle Gear or Amazon. They look beefy but the C clamp is made from cheese steel. Before using the tool to push out a chain pin you have to grind off the head of the pin to the greatest extent possible.
Modern rivet type master links typically have a hollow pin so the chain tool just has to flare out the end. Doing this is fairly easy and the tool doesn't undergo too much stress.
