Guys,
I have the original Boge Mulholland shocks on my 78 KZ1000B2.  I want to replace them.  I was about to pull the trigger on some Ikon Basix shocks as they seem like something cost effective and would work.  Then I see they have Ikon Dial-A-Ride shocks.  I ride alone and rarely ever pack anything more that a small back pack, so I wonder if they would be worth the money considering the basic riding I do.  Then to make matters worse I found these:

Anyone ever use Tec shocks?

I'd really like to hear your opinions on the 3 shocks.  I am kind of leaning towards the Ikon Basix shock.  What do you think?

I too am in the market and looking for replacement shocks for my '791000/B3. I will be watching this thread closely.

Have you thought about having the mulholland shocks rebuilt ?  

For what its worth, the TEC shocks are Chinese, now there are some very good shocks coming out of China, BUT, there are a few reports on bike forums of these TEC shocks failing, breaking.   Google TEC shock failure.

I'm wondering why you want to replace them.  Are they leaking?  

 

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

I did think about trying to find someone to rebuild those shocks, but also wonder if buy some new progressive rate spring shock would be a better ride.  Has shock technology not changed in 40 years?  The Mulhollands seem really stiff, its a rough ride, and my old back hates it.  Thanks for the info about the tec shocks.  Are Ikons still a good buy?  Basixs or the the adjustable damper ones?

Yes. The high level shocks and forks of today are a quantum leap ahead of the stuff that these old bikes came with. Yes, you can still buy cheap crappy stuff if you want, but the latest top-shelf stuff is surprisingly good.
For example, I recently replaced the shocks on my ZRX. It came with fully adjustable, piggyback KYB shocks that were pretty high-zoot twenty-one years ago. The new Bitubo shocks have the same adjustment features, but they perform much better in every way. The tire stays planted even on rough pavement, cornering is much more stable and confidence inspiring, and the ride is noticeably more plush.

I don’t think they are rebuildable. I have a couple set for my ‘76ltd and they are sealed cartridge. If you know that these can be rebuilt I’d like to know. Thanks.

I have Hagon shocks on my KZ650.  I've had them for the past 14 years (17,000 miles) and they still work and look great.  They look very similar to the original KZ650 shocks, but they work 1,000 times better.  Ed

I don’t think they are rebuildable. I have a couple set for my ‘76ltd and they are sealed cartridge. If you know that these can be rebuilt I’d like to know. Thanks.

Yeah, I know, the point of the links, especially the Aussie ones , was that virtually any shock is rebuildable, anything that can be put together can be pulled apart, you just have to go to the right place, or do it yourself, they really aren't that hard to pull apart, some sort of spring clamp will help, even big zip ties work.  Most seals are relatively easy to source, I've done some weird combinations of wheels and things and have never failed to find seals yet, bearings is a different story but i've ended up lucky there too..
If you can't do it yourself, look around, if I can find a couple of shops here in Australia that rebuild all shocks, there's bound to be way more in the US, I generally have to source everything overseas, our market is tiny and run by highway robbers, trying to get customers to fund their pensions....

Ok, I think I still want new shocks, it's easier for me.  Still looking for opinions on new shocks.
