Struggling trying to remove the side stand. was created by Missile2511
Hello all, I am trying to remove the side stand on my 1979 kz 650b3 and I am having a hard time drilling out the pin that holds it on. Is there a secret to this?
Thanks,
Joe

Why are you using a drill rather than a spanner ????Hello all, I am trying to remove the side stand on my 1979 kz 650b3 and I am having a hard time drilling out the pin that holds it on. Is there a secret to this?

Remove the nut, remove the bolt, and it will come off easily. You will probably want to remove the spring first. Be careful, it is pretty stout.
No drilling needed.

PS: Don't forget the inner hole is threaded, once the nut is off you need to unscrew the bolt (you can't take the nut off and knock the bolt through)Remove the nut, remove the bolt, and it will come off easily. You will probably want to remove the spring first. Be careful, it is pretty stout.

I don't know what pin there would be. The diagrams don't show a side stand pin & the main stand should have a cotter pin.
To remove the spring deploy the stand, place pennies between the coils, then retract the stand & remove the spring. or something like that. Wear eye protection.

Thanks for all of your replies. I realize now that you are all correct, but someone beat me to it and found that the bolt is stripped and simply spins when you try to turn it out. They cut the head off and attempted to drill it out and found that the bit simply spins the bolt. I need a way to stop the bolt from spinning while I drill it out and I am not equipped to spot weld it from behind.

Same guy cut off the back of the bolt and there is nothing to grab onto to stop it from spinning.

A couple of pics might help. Is the nut still on the bolt? If so, would it be possible to cut it off w a mini hacksaw. maybe jam something between the bolt & side stand to keep it from spinning?

If the thread is stripped and the nut has been cut off you should be able to just tap out the bolt from behind using a suitable drift.

Thanks again. I like the idea of tapping it out from behind. I have already cleaned off the last remaining thread on the end of the bolt with a grinding wheel, but I was not able to tap it out. I am going to lift the back of the bike up a few feet with a chain fall so that I get some leverage and test that idea again.
I will let you know what happens.
‘Thanks,
‘Joe

Just out of interest, is there enough of a gap between the stand and the bracket to get a hacksaw blade in (you should be able to apply enough sideways pressure on the stand to stop the bolt spinning while you cut it) whichever way you go will be a PITA at this stage.!
Space permitting you may also be able to push it out from behind with a two legged puller (they aren't expensive)
got to love the PO (why would you cut the head off a bolt that turns !!!!!!!!)
