chain to shaft
08 Apr 2025 12:47
I prefer shaft drive due to cleanliness and lower maintenance.
I have a 88 ZG1000 for a parts bike. Is it possible to swap that rear end into a '81 Ltd 750 or a 83 CSR 650 ( 650 runs but is stripped, 750 is complete but the is engine locked up) WITH OUT splitting the engine case?
I'm a diesel mechanic so I'm sure I can do it even if I have split engine cases open I just don't want to get that deep into it.

Seems like an interesting project. I reckon the answer to your question is maybe.
I imagine that splitting the cases would be much simpler than getting the front bevel gear assembly bolted to the case and the frame modified to take the driveshaft / swingarm assembly.

Please tell me you'r a better diesel mechanic than the one who rebuilt this engine using a ton of RTV. Sorry I couldn't resist

Not sure about the mid-size capacity bikes, but the Kz1000/1100’s shafty’s have much wider frames at the swingarm pivot area to make room for the additional space needed to accommodate the driveshaft. I do know that the output shafts for the transmissions are different so splitting the cases is necessary.

Re: chain to shaft
10 Apr 2025 01:53Am I right in assuming you simply want to make the 650/750 shaft drive ?I prefer shaft drive due to cleanliness and lower maintenance.

Assuming the ZG1000 swingarm will fit between the frame spars (unlikely) you will also need to do a significant amount of fabricating to convert to the ZG mono-shock back end or convert the swingarm to "twin shock" which will also involve some creative fabricating as the swingarm encompasses the shaft drive (pic below) and is likely to be asymmetric. You will also most likely need a "custom" driveshaft along with a motor strip to install a shaft drive output shaft in the transmission. If all you are trying to achieve is a shaft drive 650/750 I would suggest selling all that you have and looking for a GT/Spectre 750 that is factory "shaft", open a cold beer and "call it done" Don't get me wrong, I love a good project and a bit of modification where the "output" justifies the "input"

Swingarm won't fit the 650 /750 chain drive frames and you would need a donor GT750 engine for the crankcases ,output shaft gearbox parts and the bevel box.

Re: chain to shaft
10 Apr 2025 19:12 - 10 Apr 2025 19:13The mid size 750 frames for the shaft drive are about 2-1/2" wider at the swing arm than the chain drive bikes (they hide it real well) Looked into this myself thinking I could graft a 750 Spectre motor into a 650 frame. Had to end up converting the shaft drive engine to chain drive. Not sure about the mid-size capacity bikes, but the Kz1000/1100’s shafty’s have much wider frames at the swingarm pivot area to make room for the additional space needed to accommodate the driveshaft. Re: chain to shaft
11 Apr 2025 07:46maybe someone can suggest a chain wax or some other "clean" chain lubricant such as dupont teflon chain saver.I prefer shaft drive due to cleanliness and lower maintenance.
I have ... ... ... '81 Ltd 750 or a 83 CSR 650 ( 650 runs but is stripped, 750 is complete but the is engine locked up)...
650csr frame is the same as the 750H, so you could swap everything from the ltd to the csr. or swap the engines. your choice. both have the same charging and ignition systems. the ltd had a better headlight, H4 vs sealed beam, plus a reserve lighting unit. the rear disk and swing arm should swap to the csr. it can be on the 81/82 csr. meter assys are swap-able.
