Forgot to answer your question waterman... Right now, my wheels are spoke wheels. I think I have a 16" rear wheel. I may just keep them for now as I think they look cooler than the mags, especially once I get the rims powdercoated. I may eventually try to mount a ZRX fork and swing arm in which case I'd need to use the newer wheels and brakes, but that's on down the road a ways. One step at a time...

Maverick. Dont you think it would be a better choice to find a J or GPZ frame and swap it outright. There was an 82 GPZ1100 with no motor on ebay a week ago, some guy bid $75 but did not meet the sellers reserve,it might be available still.Offer him a few hundred bucks there is no harm trying .I'll try to send you a link.

I'm with Barney on this one. Especially once you get at issues of the rake/trail of the bike. That GPZ frame will take a zrx front end and still be stable. I would like to put one on my bike (same rake as yours) too, but I also like to drive fast and I just don't know if the two work together or if I would end up with a tank slapper, and there are too many trees around here for that.

Is the head tube angle different between the KZ 1000 M and the KZ 1000 J? I guess I hadn't thought of that... Or perhaps it's just the fork tube length?

I have the manual for all these bikes...I'll look up and post this also (if no one has already done so).

Maverick. I know you are on a tight budget but I found a 1982 1000J frame with title on ebay Item #4609990557 with a buy it now price of $300, he's in Kentucky.Hope this helps.Mav I just hate to see a perfectly good Kawasaki frame cut up.Take it easy.Barney

I checked the specs on-line right here on kz rider. the 1000R and 1000M have the exact same caster angle: 29 degrees. But the trail is different by 8mm: 115mm for the R and 107mm for the M. Because the castor is the same, the only factor that would change the trail is wheel/tire size. The M is listed as a 3.25-19 and the R is a 100/90-19, but the conversion charts I found say this is the same tire size, just different units. Is this true?

Another factor that could influence the handling is the angle the frame rides at which would be influenced by the front and rear wheel/suspension height. The R rides on a 120/90-18 while the M rides on a 130/90-16 in the back. Front/Rear suspension travel is listed at 145/100mm for the R and 180/120 for the M. Lastly, the ride height wheelbase and clearance on the R is different than the M. R at 1230/1525/120 and the M at 1220/1535/130.

What do I need to consider if I'm eventually looking to upgrade the fork/swingarm to a zrx style?

the trail is different because the ltd/csr uses a leading axle fork .
the gpz/lawson/J model uses a strait fork.

a set of police forks with a J model axle(police axle is to wide) would do just fine.

Hey Barney,

Just wanted to let you know that I found a GPZ1100 frame at a local salvage yard for a good price that I'll probably be going with. Cheaper than paying a welder for custom fabrication... Haven't bought it yet though. =)
