I am about to redo a set of forks, what if I took the springs out of a longer set and used them instead of what was in there, is this doable and what would it do to the handleing

Getting the tops back on would be fun! A short length of PVC will give some preload to your current springs. Try experiment with different lengths. Can't see much over 2" needed.

The forks I'm useing on my SR are from a 76 H1, and they are going to need to be stiffer so they don't hit my oil cooler and various other parts on compression, so I'm toying with Ideas soyou can see how close the forks are to the frame
