GSXR front end on a '83 GPZ1100?

I was just offered a GSXR front end and ZX9 wheel in trade and wondering if its easier to do the bearing conversion, or swap stems if possible. Also how close a fit is a ZX9 wheel to an upside down GSXR front end. Uncharted territory for me.

did the zx the wheel is from have inverted forks? if it did, I would think it would work, but Im no expert. Can you test fit the setup before you get it?

I have an 84 GPz1100 and have an 83 GPz1100 for parts as well. How mu8ch work have you done on your 83? As far as modifications.

Probably has something to do with better handling.

The stock suspension was barely ok back in '83, and sure isn't up to today's standards. I do have braided brake lines to bypass the antidive units, and progressive springs to do the upgrade, but, a friend offered a GSXR fork, ZX9 wheel etc in trade. The later forks and wheel offer much better performance and lighter weight. Pick up a Streetfighters magazine.

Modifications, so far:
1170cc, 10.25:1
36mm RS Mikunis, Hindle pipe
welded crank, cromoly studs and nuts
Barnett clutch, undercut transmission
"deraked"
Battlax tires
Halogen headlight and signals, LED taillight
ongoing weight reduction

Does the swap change the trail?

I've already changed the trail by raising the rear to quicken the handling. The GSXR front end is shorter so if I do go through with it, I'll have to drop the rear back down to adjust the trail. It will still be less than stock, but I prefer the quicker handling. If necessary, a steering damper can be fitted.

You should be fine with the Gixxer front end but using the ZX9 rim may cause you problems. I tried to use a 95-97 ZX9 rim (with speedo drive) on a 01-03 Gsxr600 front end and the rim/drive assembly was about 1/2-3/4" to wide to fit the forks. If you don't need the drive it may be easier for you than it was for me. Also you may have to make spacers for the brake rotors or the calipers depending on where the two line up. Goodluck!

Thanks for the info. Maybe this is why he's parting with it! Probably be easier and make more economical sense to pick up an entire front end, if I decide to go ahead.

is right on the money. i dont think the wheel will just mount right up. any thing can made to work. i put a 05-06 zzr1200 front end on it by swaping the stems and a lil machine work. i picked the complete front end up for 500 bucks. went a lot smoother than i expected.

I've decided to just do the braided brake lines, progressive springs, bypass the antidive and put in new EBC pads for next season. In the meantime I am going to trade for the ZX9 front wheel and rotors and scrounge up the rest of a ZX front end next year. Might as well go with a ZX6 rear wheel at the same time as detailed on Lorcan's site.
