Well, if you're counting votes, I'd go for at least the 650. I think you'll be looking for a bigger bike (like me) if you start out smaller than that. Not sure though what I'd do with a bike that actually ran when I bought it.

id go for either the 650 or the little honda,yeah i know but ive always liked the nighthawk bikes since they came out in early 80s.a guy at ft huachuca used to park his blue 550 nighthawk next to my 1170 on base in early 80s
Still recovering,some days are better than others.

Thank you all so much for the help, as soon as the planets align (hopefully by the end of the month) the money will be in my posession and i will become a much more active member of the forum

I really like the 550's, but even so, the one in that ad is not great looking. It looks like it's seen a lot of outside storage judging by the front disk.
That looks to be a KZ550C model. Those can be had for very little money. The one in the photos would go for about $300 or $400 running.
The Honda looks nice, but I worked on a similar bike and it was pretty slow. An inline-4 KZ will definitely be more fun.
That narrows it down to the 650.
Obviously, the older bikes like these have long histories, so bottom line is to see it in person and hear it run or even ride it.
