How far from Dunoon Argyll are you? Back in about 1979-80 I worked at the American nuke sub base right there in Holyloch. It's gone now.
I didn't get to see much of the countryside, but I did hire a car and drove out there one day. I do remember thinking how fun it would be if I had a bike over there. Beautiful!
I also remember forgetting which side of the road I was supposed to be on at one point, but a nice Scot coming towards me was sure to let me know. Not sure what language he was speaking, but I knew I'd never heard words like that before. What is a bloody F*#%$@& yank anyway? :S
And oh yeah. LOVE that Tennants Lager!

i live in dunoon but originaly from greenock just across the clyde, we used to see a lot of you guys over there at the weekends with the shore patrol doing the rounds at night.
I remember pulling up outside the Harmony pub in Dunoon on the Rickman late eighties with the sound of sweet home Alabama pimping out, got off the bike with a couple of guys saying nice bike man and another saying its only a fu..... rice burner.
Theres still a pub in Dunoon called the 51s state and i often see a 65 Mustag in the town, so you might have pulled out a long time ago but your not forgotten

I was there back when punk rock was a big thing. There were some guys with scooters with lots of lights and mirrors on them, and they had green and pink hair and they wore black leather biker type outfits. A couple even had safety pins stuck through their cheeks. Later back in the states, I saw a British movie about punk rockers and their scooters, and I can't remember the name of it.
Would that ring a bell to you?
Yeah, we still get that "fu...riceburner" crap over here too, but thats just the younger dudes who have never met a KZ1000.
Anyway, I know some of the sailors I worked with gave our navy a bad image to some of the locals. I wasn't one of them. And I dated a girl named Leyla, but I don't remember her last name. She was AWESOME! I liked her a LOT!
I stayed in a couple different bed and breakfasts, but only remember the last one. It was called the Tor-Na-Dee. Just outside town. Would that place still be there by any chance?
I've been to a lot of places and Dunoon is on my short list of places I would love to visit again.
Oh! I got to see the Highland games too! Way cool!
Just found a link to some pics of some scooters like I saw buzzing around Dunoon: www.flyingtigerssc.co.uk/
And if you watch this video carefully, you might catch a glimpse of a scooter much like the ones I saw:
