Not sure how this all works yet--but am anxious to learn.

This seems to be the site for a novice like me who needs expert around for help. I am looking to rebuild the KZ900 LTD that I bought for $1.00. I figure it was a deal. Once I cleaned the carbs the started right up.

I ran it for about a year and just felt like tearing it apart and building it out clean.

I have got it down to just the engine--and am scared to start--I have never opened an engine before, but figure its time to learn.

I don't even care what it costs me. Any advise on what to read or where to start?

I am in SLC,

The bike ran rich--I had someone work on the valves to see if we could lean it up a bit--but it never helped. We even tried running without the filter. No luck. So I just kept running it and changed to plugs ever few weeks or so.

I am going to stick this in the "Engine" part of the site. Looks like thats the place to start.

try running a compression check before you tear motor apart if the motor is still solid you can concentrate on fixing the brakes /suspension and other cosmetic stuff after 30 years these bikes tend to loosen up a lot of stuff and it will be easier on you to not have to go through motor first time if you dont have to.just run a compression check,if its close check your valve clearances and scrub motor up real good.running rich is probably a carb problem.goodluck,happy wrenching!;)

Are you running it without filters? Also a four inot one will require rejetting. But it should be running lean. Pull the carbs and see what main jets you have and contact wiredgeorge. He is the carb master and has a web site.

A 900LTD for $1.00??!!
You need a shop manual. Even if you don't want to do major engine work yourself, you should have one.

SLC.... Salt Lake City? I had to wrack my brain to come up with a city that fit those initials.
