Thanks Mcdroid, here are the numbers...
As I said I don't have too much knowledge or experience w/bikes but looking forward to learning. This bike has LOTS of miles on the odometer, not sure of the history other than it was once a police bike in Sacramento. I am assuming that is why it has the big fairing mounts on the front.

Welcome! Looks like you may have one of the original CHiPs bikes? Be nice to bring it back to original status. Save all "P" parts that you remove! Nice to have another SoCalember here! I live down in Murrieta area. We're here for ya bud.
PS, found this. Kinda interesting....
Z1-P - A 1975 Kawasaki Z1 900 cc motorcycle, modified through the addition of a shop-installed kit, then in 1976 available factory-built as a police motorcycle
KZ900 Police Special - The 1977 KZ900 motorcycle, upgraded for use as a police motorcycle
KZ1000C Police - The first built-for-law-enforcement model, intended to compete with the Harley Davidson, 1978 - 1981
KZ1000P Police - The most common model, 1982 - 2005, commonly known as the KZP

Thanks Bluemeanie...my problem is this. I understand it originally had a "shop installed kit" however, I don't know what has been removed/added. It's got the boards on it as well as the fairing mount, the electrical is a mess, the exhaust isn't factory (I asssume it is the "kit" exhaust to accomodate the CHIPS outfit). Evidently it was bought at auction and it's been "WORKED" ever since. Kind of a "FrankenZ"...hmmm. I think I've found a new name for her!
I'm looking forward to getting it on the road in any case.

We're here for ya bud! I'm down in Murrieta and a couple other members are just west of you. If things get really tough maybe one of us can swing over and lend a hand....

Welcome aboard, HEYJACKO!
A first-year CHiP bike is a great find. A full restoration would be sweet, or you could keep it as a standard.
The motor looks clean from the pic... how does she run?

Thanks for the support guys! The engine is ok....I think...I still need to check the compression. I got it started but couldn't take it for a ride to check it out...I had just rebuilt the master cylinder and the caliper is locked up. That's off now and I want to get it cleaned up.
When I picked it up the thing was pretty darned rough. Missing misc. parts and the like.
After the caliper I need to get the exhaust buttoned up, No 3 is missing the collars and gasket. I'm also getting a nasty sounding tapping ...not sure which cylinder yet.....lots of stuff to figure out.
Thanks again!
