i'm a harley rider but love all styles/makes of bikes.... well, with the exception of the Gold Wing. :S i grew up in the 70's when the KZ900 was king but never owned one. now, i have a KZ1000 that will require some tinkering but looks like an easy project. the tank is undented! the ONLY thing that i have to figure out is how to get the timing chain cover back on the engine. there's got to be a trick because there are clearance issues. anyway, i might sell the harley and keep this bike if i can get it running.

i found this 79 KZ1000 at the local scrap metal yard and bought it for $125.00. my truck is at the shop so they are holding it for me. i can't wait to get it home and get it running. only 22K miles on the odometer.

Can't go wrong for that kind of money. The valve cover is a tight fit between the frame rails and the top idler. It will go though.....

the passenger peg bracketts
the tail and rear light
the engine cases and covers
the carbs...
and voltage regulator and placement of it......IMO
the front and rear ends may be off of a 79-80 MKII kz1000 and a shot of the fender and chain gaurd would help....
you got a few bikes wrapped into one it seems....those pipes are rare!!!!!!

what it looks to me like is some kz fanatic or shop back in the day....used a bunch of stuff that was left around from other projects or blown bikes......i have an old 73 z-1 rolling motor and frame ect..that i got for 1 dollar.....and i probably had enough to half way restore it just sitting around as extra buys from my 76 900....so it makes sense now to try and score cheap deals on the remaining nagging little parts list.......in the end it will be a complete bike with many bikes little bits included...but then it willl be it's own baby....like what you got i think....
the wheels and front fender and pipes are worth a lot if they are not too dammaged ....they are ,as mentioned, from a limited production KZ1000 MKII....and those bikes have grown /are growing /in value and collectability...
there is a chance the motor is seized or tranny gear may hav edammage...there is chance that is not the case......motors are easy to come by and kz's turn up on craiglist dirt cheap some days...you may end up scoring a cheap one to donate it's parts and cash out the stuff left over...it wouyld be the cheapest way imo...to complete that bike......good luck.....

Some may have better info than this. The fenders are not MKII pieces, nor are are the tank, seat, or shocks. Still worth $125 I'd say!
EDIT: It does indeed look like a 1978 KZ1000A2 because of the passenger peg brackets. The VIN number donates an A model (standard model) in any event.
