They usually use some green scotch brite pads and stuff them into the pod. If you're worried about them getting sucked in you can also put a little wire screen in there.
Maybe someone who's actually done this can chime in.
Basically the idea is to limit the airflow through the pods a little and the lean condition goes away.
Permanent and perpetual noob.

The Gringo wrote: If at all possible try and get the stock airbox from the PO and re-install. The 440's were very sensitive to any changes to the stock airbox due to being jetted so lean for emissions. There is actually a right and a wrong way to install the factory airbox and Kawasaki put out a TSB on it. Put it on wrong and the bike runs like crap. I just sold a bike just like yours last week, only difference is the one I had was black.
The PO didn't have it but I found someone on Craigslist that had one. It should be coming in the mail soon.

Also on the side cover it says kick starter but there is no kick starter on the bike. What's up with that? Lastly what does the LTD stand for or mean?
A 1980 440LTD should be a model A1. LTD doesn't stand for anything, it is the model name and refers to the cruiser style model.
Here is some useful info from Kaw.

Well that's good to know. Thanks.
