GPZ 750 Fuel Tank Replacement

I have an 82 GPZ750 that being worked on. I've found rust in the tank and think it may need replacing before it rusts through. Does anyone know if you can find new replacement tank on the internet or will I have to settle for a used gas tank from a parted out bike?

Also, would cleaning and treating the tank make any difference?

No one makes a replacement tank that matches the lines of the R1 fuel tank. You can either attempt to recover and seal the tank you currently own (dig through the archives on this site to get in-depth discussions of sealing and all the associated trials and tribulations) or you can diligently watch eBay for another tank (remember, the fuel tanks from the 1984 KZ700A1 and the 1983 KZ750L3 are, with the exception of paint, the same as 1982 KZ750R1).

I agree with Mcdroid, you are going to need to buy a used tank, unless you just get lucky with a NOS tank showing up on eBay. That does happen, and on these rare bikes, the bidding is either frantic, or nonexistant. I got lucky and bought a NOS take-off tank for a KZ750L for only a few dollars, plus $20 shipping. It has only one or two very tiny scratches, but that was enough to keep it from getting sold back when KZ750Ls were new bikes. Today, we look at the condition of this tank and consider it to be near mint. (Yes, it is black with the red/red-orange/orange stripes.)

Even though I do not have a KZ750L yet to put it on, I am not selling it. I could make it fit on my KZ750E with some modifications to the seat mounts, but I am undecided if I want to do that. I keep hoping to find a KZ750L cheap that needs a new tank to make it perfect. Well, I can dream, can't I?

Jeez Apeman...you buy parts like I do:laugh: :laugh: maybe someday I'll have the bike to fit the part:woohoo: I have some of the electronics for a 1981 GPz1100 and I bought them 'cause they were such a great deal on eBay!...
