New rider and a Barn find so any advice

Hey so I am new to riding this hopefully will be my first bike and advice is needed  hopefully I  haven't wasted my money for this I do have the tank and it was stored dry but I am no mechanic .

My name is Larry I am in Germany thanks for having a Fourm hopefully some one could give me some guidance on this.

Looks like you found yourself a nice project.  That bike was someone's baby, based on all the nice accessories installed.

Yeah  I know the family it came from they are all complete petrol heads. My friends father rebuilt the engine so hopefully no mechanical issues and the wiring is stock except the led lights.

He even painted the engine block when it was rebuilt. He was a professional engineer and mechanic for volvo so he was very capable.

hopefully all i really need is cosmetic work but who knows what is going to happen.

Welcome to the fun!  You have found a great machine to work on.  Take you time and go through each system and make choices on what is needed ask questions, but most important is to enjoy the process.

Welcome from the UK Larry, best advice I can offer is "be methodical" and work through it one bit at a time. In the end you will have a great ride 

Thanks Wookie58 is there any particular order I should start like I was thinking  carburettor first and air I don't think I have the money this year to strip the frame so my plan is to get it as stock and running as possible. I am doing my licence at the moment so money is tight buying lessons and gear in Germany is expensive. Any advice is greatly appreciated and should I move this to a project thread

Start by reading the "new members thing to know" thread.  Inside you will find several "must have" maintenance items that should be dealt with before trying to start the bike.

Personally, I'm a carb guy, so I go straight at those.  I have O-ring kits, if you can't find what you need in the local market.  Replace the rubber carb boots.  Adjust the valves.  Clean out the tank.  Replace fuel line.  Break down the brake calipers and master, looking for corrosion, and replacing parts as needed.  Where to start?  Everything!

Our preference on a project like this is - before we make it go, we make very sure it will stop. Brakes are very high-priority.

Welcome. You have quite the project there. 
Get it running then work on the safety and maintenance items (brakes, tires, chain and sprockets, lights) then ride it while you do the cosmetics.

Moving to a "project" thread would be a great way for us to keep track of what you are doing and the progress you make. As far as "what order" there are several viewpoints already expressed on this, my personal opinion is that as long as you have gone through all the main systems prior to taking it on the road, the order should be determined by your budget and confidence levels (some things like cleaning and greasing head bearings etc is cheap, other things like brakes maybe not so cheap depending on what is required)
