Greetings from NC, guys.

It’s been about a 40 year hiatus since I owned an early 80’s KZ750. A bit of a story but I was ultimately smitten by Ducati’s back in the early 90’s and didn’t look back until this past summer on a trip up to the North East. While out on a bike ride (the pedal type) I noticed a couple of bikes heading in my direction and before they even got to me… that sound… I know that sound! Sure enough a pair of LTD 1k’s went by in the other direction. Returned back home and the search was on. It was not at all what I had in mind but I came across an 1980 Z1-Classic with 1,253 original miles on it. Personally, I think the bike was the right idea (fuel injection) but it was cursed by poor execution. So… the plan is to simply turn it into a conventional 1000 LTD. The bike I couldn’t afford back in the day. Fuel injection is pulled and now I am focusing on turning it into an 80 LTD. I hope it will be a straight forward project but I am sure I will run into some gremlins along the way. If so, I hope I may be able to lean on some of you to provide a bit of adult supervision.

Cheers.

Welcome to KZR...you are going the route of many owners of the KZ1000G model...switching to CV carbs.  Did you try and run the bike with the original FI?  Don't discard the FI system as if you ever decide to move on from the G model, the original FI system will be an added value for resale.

"Adult supervision" may be a stretch, but you can definitely find some good answers here.

Thanks for the welcome, guys!

Mcdroid (who knew... another Mick?), yes. The original FI system is still on hand and the bike ran, albeit not ideally. My guess is that the injectors simply need a good cleaning.

I couldn’t agree more. Especially Western NC.
