The popping has gone away. Air was getting into the pipes at the flange. Now back to the carbs.

Steve, I don’t think there were any KZ1000 heads, factory painted. All were raw casting.
I have my old KZ1000 head off and my shop if you want photo comparisons. Etc

Z1R was factory black as was the ST, MK2, G1 and H motors.

What gets me is there's no front cam chain guide, not even a place for one.

Guide goes in the block not the head.

Yeah the pins go in the cylinder block, not the head. But you know that.
