'83 KZ1100 Shaft Head Help was created by ForsakeNxJT
I have an '83 KZ1100 Shaft that, while having the carbs rebuilt,  I decided to tackle an oil leak below the cylinders.  When Putting everything back together I was torque-ing the camshaft covers to 10 ftlbs and a couple of the bolts stripped the threads out.  I attempted to fix with helicoils but to no avail.  Does anyone know of a shop the can fill and recap and die these threads or where I can find a replacement head?  I've tried all my local machine shops and none of them will touch it or return my calls.

What kind of heilcoils did you try? Pics? You may have to go with inserts like these if the holes are too big for Time Serts.

10ft/lbs is too tight.
Around 7ft/lbs max is all you would need on the cam cover and just nipping up by hand with a 10mm spanner is really all that's needed.

@Daveo The camshafts are fine I would need a cylinder head, if I can't fix the one I have.

You say "camshaft covers", are you referring to the "camshaft caps" instead? The chunks of aluminum with 4-bolts per that hold your camshaft in place? Also are they broken on only one side, Intake or Exhaust?

yes the mounting holes for the camshaft caps.  the inserts listed above should do the trick.

Not to complex things but.. If You'd stripped one of the threads in/under one of the locater dowels, don't use an insert. You'll oversize the milling for the dowel. If all your problems are specific to ONE camshaft then you can just stud them. Ya can't do both, won't be able to get the camchain on.

And Lord above, why this happens all the time is user error. Then the bitchin" begins. NEVER use the M6 bolts to pull the couple lobes resting on the buckets to force the camshaft covers into submission!!
