Engine and frame identification!!!! was created by old_skool_77
Got an older Kz. Not exactly sure on the year or the frame or engine. The numbers on the frame and the casing is what I think is hand stamped, uneven numbers and letters. I looked at an 80 ltd that have and both frame and engine numbers are perfectly uniformed. Just was lookin to shed some light on my curiosity. I looked thru a few websites for the numbers but didn't find anything to show what I had. If anyone can tell me what I have or a website that might be able to help, I would greatly appreciate it.

The numbers on the frame are k1 019500 but the #1 that is before the nine is stamped backwards. And the number on the engine casing is k1e 019567. Another reason I believe they are hand stamped is the indentions aren't the same depth and some of the numbers and letters aren't trued, (flat and even thru out the stamp line). Was this common practice on kz's at one time? The frame also says made in Japan in the middle of the bar where the id marks are printed. Id marks on left side of bar if yer sittin on it. Any help is appreciated once again. Thanks

where the engine number is there should be a outer lip or raised casting lip that goes around the number sort of a border to the number, is this lip there or is it flat?

I don't understand a legal purpose for restamping a frame or engine. Maybe it's because there are different laws in different states? In MD the VIN stamped on the frame is used for registration of the bike, so your title and that frame should match. If you were to restamp a frame to a number different than that on your title it would no longer match the registration (not good). By the same token, if you were to steal a bike, grind off its number, and stamp in a number that matched your title, that would be illegal. The engine number never comes into play in MD. I had a 350cc single cylinder BSA model B40 into which I stuffed a 500cc twin BSA Cyclone engine, but the bike still was registered with the B40 frame number - no problem. Ed

I dont think factory replacement frames and engine cases came with numbers stamped in them, but are very few/far between.
Real early z1 cases didnt have raised rib on them. B)
