They start with the first year of that model. Each succeeding year they add an appendix showing the differences between the first year and the next year.
Say the first year was 1975. The 75 manual would show everything. Then they released a 76 model. The 76 manual wopuld have the 75 manual with an appendix for 76 that showed the changes. The 77 manual would have the 75 manual with the 76 appendix and the 77 appendix. Etc.

As shown in the "Remarks" on the back cover of FSM (Factory Service Manual) Part No. 99931-540-03, some differences on the 1978 model include:
Slight difference in carbs;
Vacuum operated petcock;
Front brake caliper on rear of fork leg.
