Removing Kickstarter Pedal ? was created by kzdcw
Is there an easier way to remove the kickstarter pedal from my 77' KZ1000A ? When I ride, the end of the rides on the inside of my right calf. That might be part due to me using Dual pod air filter rather than the stock airbag which may kick out the pedal a little.
Anyway bolt removed easy, just the pedal won't slide off the splined shaft even with me trying to gently spreading the pedal at the shaft while tugging at the pedal. I liberally soaked the pedal and shaft area with liquid wrench.
Don't want spread the pedal too much in fear of breaking/cracking it. Anyone have any Better Ideas ?

Kick start should come right off with some wiggling and maybe a little prying with flat bar behind kick starter as long as bolt is removed. .
Mine just slides off so maybe you got some corrosion .

Dave, I'll let it soak with Liquid Wrench for a bit. Bolt removed easily, no signs of corrosion. I know you can spread pedal at bolt a little but didn't want to force it. Haven't figured a way to walk pedal off of shaft yet, maybe some type of puller ?

You can tap a screwdriver in the slit just enough to free it. You just have to be careful.

Steve, I'm sure that's a better way than what I was trying to do which was just sticking a large flat blade screwdriver in the slot and twisting the handle by hand while trying to tug at pedal. Not working.

Try tapping on the kickstarter next to the spline shaft with a hammer ( Brass or put something on part before hitting to protect the finish.
This may shock the bond enough to release it . I would then wiggle and pry the kickstarter and it should come off.

Remove the circlip and pull of the kicker
get the right two arm puller
everything else and unnecessary force destroy your kickstarter cover

The pullers are cool, but I'm just trying to remove the Pedal, not the shaft/gear assembly.

So you are trying to remove #10 from #6 in the diagram??
As already mentioned, just remove the e-clip and it should slide off very easily. If not, I would suggest some better penetrant like Kroil or a 50-50 mixture of acetone and atf.

You might try cocking it forward one spline on the shaft so it won't be hitting your leg as much or get a new one. I love my kick starter.
