There is indeed a steel ring that retains the dust seal on Z1 caliper bodies. Don't know about KZ1K's.

I replaced the dust seal some days ago.
The easiest way to install was to enter it on the piston first and then have it on the edge of the piston. Next was to turn the piston around to enter the opening of the calipper.

I had many attempt first by install the dust cover in the calipper and then install the piston, but I gave up :) the dust cover was always loosing from the calipper.

When it comes to removing the piston, do I remove the boot first or pop the piston out first, then remove the boot ??

Pop the piston and than take out the dust boot and seal.

Its very critical that you remove ALL debris and corrosion from the grove that holds the seal. Use Red Rubber grease to assemble the seal and piston.

AND!! If you use air to pop out the piston???
Don't keep your finger in the way holding the caliper body! Or else!
It will leave a mark! And your finger will be sore for a few days!
You can guess why!

And, as others have typed. put the seal around the piston first and hook it into the small metal grove at the caliper bore.
Then slip piston in working the seal around. I use a popsicle stick to slip around and work it.
