650ed, Thanks for the link to the shop manual. You'll be happy to know I finally pulled the trigger on it. I had to wait until January before I could pay for it, hence the delay.

hmmm must be the e model, although the same retail value as the others it is more classy.
hmm, considering getting an extra set of rims and putting off road endurocross tires on them for those days that I don't want to ride on the street.

Update: The shop was willing to do the carbs for me in exchange for the guitar (I think the shop owner wanted it for a Christmas present for his kid). Since I am so inexperienced and the bike is in otherwise good shape, some friends suggested I stay away from the carbs for now.

The work that remains is to replace the fork seals, change the brake pads and change the oil, all of which are within my abilities.

Question: While pushing the bike around, it feels like I'm fighting the front brakes, so it's possible something's going on up there. Any thoughts on what might be wrong? I'm thinking I may need to overhaul the calipers?

Before considering rebuilding the calipers I would start by changing the brake fluid. There might be something funky in there keeping the caliper pistons from retracting, and pumping new fluid through the system may clear it out. Ed

brake fluid change is a good possibility, also consider if it needs wheel bearings, try some caliper pin grease too.

just curious as to which handles better, the h or the e, the h has a smaller rear wheel than the e. 16" vs 18".

The shop manual I bought off eBay came this week. I think I can tell the kinds of things the shop worked on these bikes the most, just by the pages that have the most greasy finger prints. :-)

Is it bad that I fell asleep reading a shop manual and dreaming of all the stuff I could do to this bike?

All I need now is more time to work on the bike...

And cash...
