The black plugs on the ends of the cover....the shop mechanic strongly advised me to replace them as he had issues with the plugs in the past. Any backup on this viewpoint? I've seen them on eBay, but they are hard to come by and I have a long 4-5 hour trip up north next weekend so unfortunately I have no time to spare to order parts.

Secondly, the plugs require a gasket maker sealant. The shop mechanic advised going with the "Ultra Black" RTV sealant, it is designed for 500 degrees (intermittently) and maximum oil resistance. However, next to it I found the "Ultra Copper" which is not as good in oil resistance as the black, but is designed for the higher 700 degrees heat. I currently purchased the black, but am having doubts with the temperature.

If you are talking about what are commonly called cam end plugs and you have any doubt about them, replace them. They are not expensive and are widely available at dealerships, Z1E, partszilla, etc.

For sealant, Three Bond is best (aka, Kawibond, Yamabond, Hondabond, etc.)

I have two tanks. One from my Z! and the other from a KZ 900. Both are 3.7 gallons. I wish they were 4.7 The Z1 has cut outs to adjust the 28's. The KZ 900 doesn't.

Look at the specs for a 1975 Z1 fuel capacity

My 76 900 LTD & 80 LTD both have 3.7 Gal fuel tanks, & I know they are smaller than the Z1 tanks

All I know when I go on reserve I can only put in 3 gallons. It says on this page the 76 came with a larger fuel tank.

I'm working on my KZ 900 tank. For SHT's and grins, I'll take a gallon jug, fill it up with water and see how much it does hold.

I found my old petcock and put it on. I have gallon water jugs for emergencies. It took 4 and a little over 1/2 to fill it up. Draining now. I'm going to do it again to be sure. Must be the aftermarket petcock I got from z1partsinc. I needed to flush it out anyway.
I need to compare the two.

Steve, your tanks hold 18 litres, so that's 4.7 us gallons or 3.9 imperial gallons. The imperial gallons might be where you got the 3.7 figure from, not sure.
